Few Credit Professionals set out to become career Account Receivable Managers. Rather they find themselves entrenched in a career of credit management more by happenstance rather than good management. Likewise little attention is given to the development of career credit professionals by either the business or academic community. Yet credit management is saddled with the responsibility of managing the single largest asset for the majority of today's American businesses.

The Credit Research Foundation in cooperation with NACM is the foremost resource for establishing standards for and the development of credit professionals throughout the country. The Guide for Professional Development in Business Credit was originally published by CRF in 1987 and was recently revised through the cooperative efforts of The Credit Professional Society of Minneapolis and CRF. The guide defines standards related to professional development for practitioners in the field of credit management and assigns specific skill and behavioral competency requirements to each job level, starting with entry level up to and through the most senior position. The guide serves a dual function. It establishes a road map for career credit professionals in defining those skills essential to career development, and provides senior management with a tool in understanding what skill levels and behavioral competencies are required to fulfill specific responsibilities within the scope of receivable management. This publication coupled with CRF's Credit and Accounts Receivable Compensation Study are designed to establish a baseline for identifying the appropriate skill and compensation level for all job duties within the A/R function.
