In 2015 the Library, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, Mecklenburg County and the City of Charlotte accepted the White House ConnectED Library Challenge, pledging to provide students with easily accessible information and educational resources.
By the end of 2015, that pledge had become a reality, as more than 100,000 of 147,000 CMS students accessed Library services using their student IDs in an initiative called ONE Access™.
ONE Access, or “One Number Equals Access,” uses students' school identification numbers instead of separate library cards. With their ONE Access account, students can:
Access Library research databases
Borrow digital materials such as e-books, e-audiobooks, magazines, music and video
Borrow up to 10 print or audio books (no DVDs or music CDs)
There are no overdue fines for ONE Access accounts, but users are responsible for fees on lost or damaged books.
During this Tech Tuesday, we will speak with Martha Yeswitch and Michael Engelbrecht from Charlotte Mecklenburg County Library to explore the logistics, technical and administrative set-up and the outcomes of OneAccess as well as how your library can create a similar program with your local schools.
Charlotte Mecklenburg County Library has 20 locations and serves a community of over one million people.

Diana Silveira is the President of Novare Library Services, a company that focuses on web, mobile and infrastructure services for libraries. Previous to starting Novare Library Services, she was the Virtual Reference Manager for Florida’s Ask a Librarian Service and coordinator for Florida’s Statewide Delivery System. She presents regularly on implementing technology, best practices and privacy issues online. She also works with libraries to deploy new technologies and develop new mobile and desktop websites.
