Merchandise Description

This two-hour webinar was recorded on August 12, 2014.

This two-hour online class provides an introduction to the fundamentals of cataloging perfect for the beginning cataloger who needs to know what means what and why; the non-cataloger who wants to understand how the database works to improve their searching abilities; and the experienced cataloger who just needs a review.

Topics to be covered:

  • ISBD description: The basics of what we use and don’t use in cataloging items and why. These basics are so fundamental they work for whatever rules you are using.
  • Access Points: The most important things to have in your cataloging record and why they are important to the patrons and staff.
  • Subject Headings: The basics of what subject headings are, how they work, and where to find them.
  • MARC: Where all of the above goes in the MARC record, how it looks in the public catalog, and the little things that really matter in the coding so you are getting what you paid for with your ILS.

Objectives: To understand and apply basic rules of description, subject headings and MARC records for use in Copy Cataloging and/or Original Cataloging.

Methods:

  • Hands-on exercises applying the concepts being introduced in a real-world scenario.
  • Proven interactive and creative group exercises to create an accessible platform for learning the abstract concepts being introduced.

Outcomes: Catalogers will leave with practiced applicable and practical knowledge that can be immediately applied to their particular job of copy cataloging or original cataloging. Reference and Circulation staff will leave with improved searching skills and a better understanding of how the database works. Every attendee will leave with knowledge that will improve communication between frontline and backroom activities.
