Program Description


This five hour program will focus on the significant differences between the ethical rules of a lawyer and CPA in Washington. We will also discuss the possible conflicts of interest and breach of fiduciary duty.

 

Speakers

 

Joseph L. Brotherton, Attorney, CPA

Joseph L. Brotherton is a graduate of the University of Washington School of Business and the University of Washington School of Law. He practiced with Price Waterhouse before establishing his own law firm and CPA firm. He continues to practice in those areas and is an active builder, developer and operator of real estate projects in Washington, Alaska and Arizona. He founded the Washington chapter of AAA-CPA, is a past President of the National AAA-CPA organization and currently serves as President of the AAA-CPA Foundation. Joe and his wife Maureen have five children, including at least one lawyer and one CPA so far. He serves on various boards and teaches at The University of Washington Law School. 

 

James J. Rigos, Attorney, CPA, CMA

James J. Rigos is an attorney-CPA-CMA who has written and lectured widely in the area of professional accounting individual and CPA firm ethics and legal liability. He has been involved as an advocate in over 200 legal and ethical claims against CPAs since 1980. He has served on the WSCPA's Mediation Committee and the AICPA's Accountants Legal Liability Committee. He is a National Director of the AAA-CPA and past President of the Washington State Chapter of the AAA-CPA. Jim also serves as the current Chair of the AAA-CPA National Ethics and Dual Rights Committee.

CONTINUING EDUCATION INFORMATION

AAA-CPA  continuing education programs are designed to meet the needs of Attorneys and CPAs and to qualify for credit both as CPE and CLE. Of course, the decisions of various state authorities determine the actual credit granted. There are no prerequisites or advance preparation requirements for this course.

Accounting CPE/Legal CLE/MCLE

The American Association of Attorney-CPAsis registered with the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA) as a sponsor of continuing professional education on the National Registry of CPE Sponsors. State boards of accountancy have final authority on the acceptance of individual courses for CPE credit. Complaints regarding registered sponsors may be submitted to the National Registry of CPE Sponsors through its website www.learningmarket.org. A brochure with full details of the program is available from the association at 888-288-9272. These programs meet the NASBA standards of 1 (50 minute) hour of instruction.  If you require CLE in a state not mentioned, please call our national office and we will do our best to arrange for credit in your state.
