Program Description

The current gifting and estate tax legislation enacted in December 2010 arrived with far better terms than even the most optimistic pundits could have predicted. But the legislation is temporary, providing only a two-year extension.

We've recently completed a research project to analyze the benefits of planning during this two-year window. Our Wealth Management Team looked at the estate planning implications of both the income and estate tax law, as well as the current low interest rates. We believe that for many families, planning done in the coming two years could address all of their estate planning needs for the rest of their lives.

About the Speakers

Stephen M. Lippman is a Director in Bernstein's Wealth Management Group. Based in New York, he works closely with the firm's clients and their professional advisors on a variety of complex investment planning issues, including traditional defined benefit plans, cash balance defined benefit plans, pre-transaction planning, multigenerational wealth transfer, philanthropy and diversification planning for holders of concentrated portfolios (both directly held shares and employee stock options). Prior to assuming this position in 2010, Lippman was a wealth management specialist, and before that he served as a quantitative analyst in the Wealth Management Group, developing customized analytics to assist high-net-worth clients and defined benefit plans with asset allocation decisions. Prior to joining the firm in 2001, he was a consulting actuary at William M. Mercer, Inc., a global benefits consulting firm, for six years. Lippman earned a BS in mathematics from the University of Arizona.

Eric L. Settle is a Financial Advisor in Bernstein Global Wealth Management's Philadelphia office. He provides asset allocation and wealth planning advice to individuals, families, entrepreneurs and business owners. Prior to joining the firm in 2010, Settle was a government and regulatory affairs consultant with IKON Public Affairs and was the lead lobbyist for the Pennsylvania law mandating insurance benefits for children with autism. Earlier, he was chief counsel for UnitedHealthcare of Pennsylvania, and before that he was senior vice president and chief counsel for AmeriChoice, a United Health Group company that serves government healthcare beneficiaries. Previously, he was the regional general counsel for Aetna US Healthcare, deputy general counsel to Pennsylvania governor Tom Ridge and in private law practice at Fox, Rothschild, O'Brien and Frankel and at Wolf Block. Settle earned a BA, cum laude, in political science from Colgate University and a JD with honors from George Washington University, where he was a member of The George Washington Law Review.
