Webinar Summary


DC Water distributes drinking water and collects and treats wastewater for more than 672,000 residents and 17.8 million annual visitors in the District of Columbia. DC Water also provides wholesale wastewater treatment services for 1.6 million people who live outside the District. DC Water operates a 384 MGD Advanced Wastewater Treatment plant at Blue Plains in Washington that includes a side stream nutrient removal system for their high ammonia filtrate stream. This side stream treatment is the first application of Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (Annamox) using the DEMON® control strategy for thermally hydrolyzed sludge. The Filtrate Treatment Facility (FTF) is designed to treat 0.6 kg N/m3/day with a minimum ammonia removal of 72% and total nitrogen removal of 65%. This presentation will outline the start-up, commissioning and results of the operational demonstrations of the system. We will also highlight the operational challenges, system modifications, and control optimization made for long term operation.


Speaker Profile


Miguel Miranda and Shawna Martinelli Gill are Process Engineers at DC Water responsible for process reliability, system reporting and project commissioning. Miguel holds a M.S. in Environmental Engineering from Virginia Tech, is a licensed Environmental Engineer in DC, and is an ABC Licensed Wastewater Treatment Operator. Shawna holds a M.S. in Chemical Engineering from NJIT, is a licensed Environmental Engineer in DC and NY, and is an ABC Licensed Wastewater Treatment Operator.
