Webinar Summary

The COVIDPoops19 global dashboard of wastewater monitoring sites, universities, and dashboards won the AAEES 2021 E3S Grand Prize in University Research. Wastewater Based Epidemiology (WBE) was used before for other pathogens, but the field has grown exponentially with the COVID-19 pandemic. The COVIDPoops19 dashboard and Twitter account have been instrumental in tracking these efforts and facilitating global coordination now in 58 countries, over 3,200 sites, 273 universities, and 105 dashboards. In this webinar we will discuss the origins of the dashboard, temporal and equity analysis, and evolution into a global data center, Wastewater SARS Public Health Environmental REsponse (W-SPHERE).

About the Presenter

Dr. Colleen C. Naughton is an Assistant Professor in Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of California Merced. Her lab co-designs sustainable Food-Energy-Water Systems for and with the UnderServed (FEWS-US) nationally and globally. The FEWS-US lab specializes in Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). In responsiveness to the pandemic, the FEW-US lab developed a global dashboard and Twitter account, COVIDPoops19 of wastewater monitoring for SARS-CoV-2 and then joined global data center team. Prior to joining UC Merced, Dr. Naughton was an American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Science and Technology Policy Fellow in Washington D.C. She is a Returned Peace Corps Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene Volunteer from Mali, West Africa, and University of South Florida (M.S. and PhD.), and Purdue (B.S.) alumni in Civil Engineering.
