Webinar Summary

Communities worldwide have adopted biological phosphorus removal technology to meet increasingly stringent water quality requirements while also achieving more cost-efficient and sustainable results than they might realize through other processes. Yet, understanding of the technology’s ecology, functionality and optimal design has remained incomplete. As the wastewater industry and communities seek a universally recognized and user-friendly approach, this session will review the technical development of a particular configuration, Side Stream Enhanced Biological Phosphorus Removal (S2EBPR), which uses anaerobic conditioning of activated sludge biomass to promote stability and consistent performance in the biological nutrient removal (BNR) process and aids in sustainable phosphorus recovery. It will also reveal efforts commissioned by the Water Research Foundation and conducted by a blue-ribbon team of consulting firms, universities and utility partners from across the United States to develop design guidelines, operational tool recommendations, and modeling best practices for S2EBPR facilities.

Downing provides technology leadership in support of Black & Veatch process engineering and applied research projects globally. Dr. Downing has spent the last 15 years working with process and operational changes focused on energy efficiency, nutrient removal, and resource recovery. He is currently serving as the Principal Investigator for Water Research Project 4975, which focuses on developing practical considerations for fermentative enhanced biological phosphorus removal. Dr. Downing is also a co-Principal Investigator on Water Research Project 5083, where low energy biological nutrient removal process are being investigated. Between these two research projects, design guidelines for the next generation of biological nutrient removal facilities will be developed for the industry.
