Webinar Summary
“Over the last 50 years, the Sanitation Districts have been the nation’s largest producer of recycled water. However, climate change and drought call for more recycling,” said Robert C. Ferrante, Chief Engineer and General Manager for the Sanitation Districts.
The challenge is: when more water is recycled, less is discharged to rivers where that water often supports habitat. The Sanitation Districts worked closely with non-governmental organizations, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and the United States Fish and Wildlife Service to evaluate San Gabriel River habitat and hydrology and, ultimately, develop an adaptive management plan that balances societal and environmental needs for water.
Under this plan, the Sanitation Districts incrementally reduce flows from their five water reclamation plants that discharge to the San Gabriel River watershed while biologists monitor riparian vegetation to ensure that sensitive habitat is sustained.
