The Arkansas Environmental Federation, a business group with over 250 member companies, has provided more than $80,000 in scholarship awards to 43 students since 1992. The association awards the scholarships to assist students who intend to pursue business and/or education careers, specifically those that will address the regulatory concerns of industry with regard to sound science legislation and conservation and stewardship of Arkansas' environment.
The AEF offers two scholarships each year: the Randall Mathis Scholarship for Environmental Studies and the newly named Randy Thurman Scholarship. Scholarship applications are typically available in the spring of each year.
The scholarships are named in honor of Randall Mathis of Arkadelphia, the longtime director of the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality and former Arkansas Pollution Control and Ecology Commissioner, and Randy Thurman, who served as the Executive Director of AEF for 20 years. Both scholarships are administered by the AEF.
