Hillcrest in the morning.
Stroll from
the Langham Huntington, Pasadena hotel directly into the Pasadena Hillcrest
neighborhood, one of Pasadena's most beautiful neighborhoods. Explore
various architectural styles such as Mediterranean, Victorian and the
neighborhood's ubiquitous Craftsman inspired homes. Showcased on the tour are
numerous grand estate mansions along with Craftsman homes such as the Freeman
House designed by architects Arthur and Alfred Heineman and the Blacker House
designed by Charles and Henry Greene.
The morning
walking tour will allow you to discover an established neighborhood of
Pasadena that was originally utilized as sheep ranch in the 1850's. Platted
during 1886 with streets following the natural curves of the canyon rims, the
neighborhood was the first subdivision in Pasadena that followed new planning
principles that would integrate suburbs into the natural environment.
Bungalow Heaven in the afternoon.
After
enjoying a box lunch in the park, you will be transported to Bungalow Heaven, a
quiet, leafy, close-knit neighborhood of historic, early 20th century bungalow
homes, many built during the Arts & Crafts period. You will closely see how
the movement stood in opposition to the increasing industrialization of the
time, emphasizing the artistry of the individual craftsman and the subtle
beauty of nature.
The
bungalows of Bungalow Heaven reflect these principles through their unique
architectural details and the wide use of natural and native materials. The
Gamble House (the site of AIBD/ICORD's Wednesday night dinner event) is the most
prominent example of Arts and Crafts architecture in Pasadena, but this tour will
expose you to beautiful examples of how the artisans created similar homes for
the ordinary families of the period.
Space is
limited due to transportation needs and AIBD tours commonly sell out. Therefore advanced registration is
