This conference on shale-gas and water issues is the third one convened in Texas by AIPG and AGWT. It will bring both water and energy professionals as presenters. Their informed knowledge and familiarity with the industry and the issues will provide an information exchange opportunity among citizens, communities and water and energy professionals. The 2012 and 2013 events were recognized as great source of technical and scientific information presented in an objective and easy-to-understand format.
Drought conditions in oil & gas producing regions bring water use, water quality and the concept of water "sharing" into sharp focus from technical, environmental, political and economic perspectives. Public perceptions play an important role in energy/water policy decisions. Water resources managers, water end-users, water planners and environmental NGOs have much to gain from a closer understanding of the actual water requirements of the energy industry and the advances in technology for water use, water treatment and water conservation. The last few years have seen increasing interest in options for oil & gas industry waste-water disposal and the economic potential for re-use in municipal, industrial or agricultural markets.
Ignorance is the worst enemy for the development of acceptable policy solutions and reasonable regulations. The best solutions will come from informed awareness that is based on science and fact. To that end, the AGWT and AIPG are acting as "honest brokers" of information about the geological, technical, economic, environmental and regulatory issues at the heart of the energy & water nexus.
