Please join the Capital Markets Credit Analysts Society and IBM on Thursday, March 14th 2019 for a discussion on how the capital markets industry is leveraging innovations in technology. In particular, we will address how artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies are being used within credit risk management, financial analysis and data aggregation initiatives. We will hear about the risks and challenges of these technology applications and discuss what the future holds.
Christian Bluhm, Group Chief Risk Officer, UBS AG
Christian Bluhm became a member of the GEB and was appointed Group Chief Risk Officer of UBS Group AG and UBS AG in January 2016. He joined UBS from FMS Wertmanagement, where he had been Chief Risk & Financial Officer since 2010 and Spokesman of the Executive Board from 2012 to 2015. From 2004 to 2009, he worked for Credit Suisse, where he was Managing Director responsible for Credit Risk Management in Switzerland and Private Banking worldwide. Mr. Bluhm was Head of Credit Portfolio Management until 2008 and then Head of Credit Risk Management Analytics & Instruments after the financial crisis in 2008. From 2001 to 2004, he worked for Hypovereinsbank in Munich in Group Credit Portfolio Management, heading a team that specialized in Structured Finance Analytics. Before starting his banking career with Deutsche Bank in Credit Risk Management in 1999, he worked as a postdoctoral fellow at Cornell University in Ithaca and as a scientific assistant at the University of Greifswald. Mr. Bluhm holds a degree in mathematics and informatics from the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg and received his PhD in mathematics in 1996 from the same university.
Neil Dodgson, Global Head Risk & Compliance Analytics, IBM Watson Financial Services
Neil Dodgson is the European executive for Risk & Compliance. He holds a position on the board of Risk Analytics and is responsible for representing field strategy, innovation and solution requirements. In addition, he is a member of the Watson Financial Services leadership team and manages a team of 50 subject matter experts across all disciplines of risk management - Financial Risk, Balance Sheet Risk Management, Insurance, Asset Management. Operational Risk and GRC.
Dr. Dodgson holds a first class honors degree in applied mathematics and a Ph.D. in fluid mechanics from the University of Sheffield, United Kingdom.
Joerg Landsch, Head of Innovation Labs Americas, Deutsche Bank
Joerg Landsch is the Head of Deutsche Bank Innovation Labs Americas with presences in New York and Silicon Valley. Since joining Deutsche Bank in 2001, he has held a number of business and strategic roles across Corporate & Investment Banking, business development as well as corporate M&A and wokred for the bank in Frankfurt, Hanoi, London and New York. Most recently, Joerg supported the bank's digital transformation through his Regional Management responsibilities. Joerg is also an active startup mentor.
Benny Nissan, Vice President of Strategy and Innovation, Federal Reserve Bank of New York
Benny Nissan joined the Federal Reserve Bank of New York in October 2011. As leader of the function’s strategy and innovation arm, Benny seeks to introduce the banks’ business users to innovative ways in leveraging technology, collaborating with them to explore how it might dramatically transform their business models. In addition, Benny sits on the Bank’s Fintech Steering Committee overseeing all the bank’s Fintech related initiatives.
Before coming to the Bank, Benny held the position of CTO for Gottex Fund Management, a publicly traded Fund of Funds with $17B in AUM at its peak. He also held the position of COO for a wealth management software company and led the creation of a 400 strong professional global enterprise solutions business within Thomson Reuters. His 30+ years career has been focused almost exclusively at the intersection of business and technology in the financial services industry.
Benny has a bachelor’s degree in engineering and computer science, and a MBA from Columbia University.
Sameena Shah, Managing Director and Head of Data Science, S&P Global Ratings
Sameena Shah is a Managing Director and the Head of Data Science for S&P Global Ratings. Sameena is leading Ratings’ strategic Augmented Intelligence program for leveraging Data Science in how we operate and grow. Previously, Sameena led AI strategy, research and development for Financial and News verticals of Thomson Reuters, where Sameena and her team were responsible for building and deploying several large scale AI systems. Prior to that, Sameena worked for several hedge funds, an asset management firm, a startup and Yahoo! research, in roles leveraging NLP and ML for maximizing business objectives. Sameena has won several best paper awards, industry awards and recognitions including the top PhD in the country by Microsoft Research, finalist for Top woman technology leader for 2016 by Anita Borg Institute, Cloudera Award for top AI and ML application for Reuters Tracer, and nomination for White House CTO Council. Sameena has published about fifty papers in top AI conferences, holds more than ten patents and is a frequent industry speaker. Sameena holds a PhD in Machine Learning and Optimization that was judged the top PhD in the country for the year, and a MS in Computer Science, both from IIT Delhi and a BS in Electronics Engineering from Jamia Millia, Delhi.
Ron Cathcart, Managing Director, Promontory Financial Group
Ron Cathcart brings to his role 35 years of experience in the banking sector across a broad range of risk and business areas both domestically and internationally. Prior to joining Promontory in 2017, he was responsible for the oversight of risks faced by financial institutions supervised by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. These institutions included the systemically important firms designated by the Financial Stability Oversight Council, large foreign financial institutions and large regional banking organizations. He led a team of risk professionals responsible for the full range of enterprise risks including credit, market, liquidity, compliance, operational and model risk. The work of this group was carried out within the regulatory framework established by the Board of Governors and formed the basis for an overall assessment of the firms supervised.
Mr. Cathcart also represented the Federal Reserve on the Basel Policy Development Group, responsible for reviewing and proposing international policy standards to the Basel Committee on Bank Supervision. He was until 2008, the Chief Enterprise Risk Officer of Washington Mutual, where he oversaw all aspects of risk in the organization in addition to internal audit and insurance. Prior to joining WaMu, Mr. Cathcart was the Executive Vice President Retail Risk Management for CIBC. Previously, he served as the EVP Retail Risk Management at JP Morgan Chase and as the Head of Personal and Commercial Banking Risk at RBC. In 2009, he formed the bank advisory firm, Columbia Capital Consulting which provided risk management consulting services to financial institutions.
Mr. Cathcart holds an B.A. degree from Dartmouth College and an M.B.A. from the Richard Ivey School of Business.
