Note: Registration is free to DGAC Members, but due to limitations on class size, each member will be limited to two registrations. Additional sessions are anticipated in the future.

 

Course Description:

EHS/aquatic toxicity criteria are used for transport classifications in DG regulations around the world, including the UN Model Regulations, ICAO Technical Instructions/IATA DGR, Canadian TDGR, ADR, and serve as the principal element in the classification of Marine Pollutants under the IMDG Code. This webinar will offer a deep dive into the UN classification criteria for Environmentally Hazardous Substances (aquatic environment), most commonly shipped as UN3082/UN3077.

 

Webinar Content

The webinar will cover criteria and methods for the classification of substances, criteria and methods for the classification of mixtures (including the summation method and M factors), an explanation of the types of data needed for making classification decisions, and recommendations for sources of data. A brief overview of the alternative U.S. approach to classifying environmental hazards (i.e., hazardous substances and marine pollutants) will be also be provided.

 

Webinar Methodology

The webinar will feature explanations of the criteria with accompanying examples for illustration, will make extensive use of practice exercises, including finding and using data from external sources, and will offer several Q & A sessions.

Presenter

The webinar will be presented by Denese Deeds, chair of DGAC’s GHS Working Group, and leader of the DGAC delegation to the UN Sub-Committee on the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals. More information about Denese is provided below:

In that function she prepares SDS, labels and other hazard communication documents, and assists companies with overall chemical regulatory compliance. Prior to founding IHSC she worked as an industrial hygienist for General Electric and Westinghouse. Denese is certified in the Comprehensive Practice of Industrial Hygiene by the ABIH. Denese is active on the Stewardship and Sustainability Committee and served on the team that developed the SDS and Label Author Registry.

 

She is a Fellow of the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA), a past president of the Society for Chemical Hazard Communication (SCHC), a Registered Specialist SDS and Label Authoring, the 2014 recipient of the AIHA Alice Hamilton Award, and a recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award for SCHC.
