Course Overview (Links to preparatory reading lists and class materials will be provided upon registration. Content and time schedules subject to variation.)This technical class will focus on EBCx issues, strategies, and assessment techniques including DDC and pneumatic control system issues, steam, chilled water, hot water, and air handling system issues, and persistence strategies. The course will also emphasize how EBCx lessons can inform design review for new construction projects. A case study format is used through-out the curriculum including interactive exercises allowing the attendees to practice some of the techniques that are discussed.
Course Outline Day 1: Existing Building Commissioning Process Overview, Obvious Indicators of EBCx Opportunities, Harvesting Low Hanging Fruit, and Optimizing a Pump.
Day 2: Procuring your BMS to Support EBCx and Ongoing Cx, Developing and Optimizing Control Sequences, Using Utility Data to Focus EBCx, and Assessing and Optimizing Economizer Systems.
Day 3: System Diagrams as an Assessment Technique, A Day in the Life of a VAV System, Persistence, Leveraging Your Technical Resources to Improve Performance and Promote Persistence, and Silver Linings.
Instructor Biographies
J.Jay Santos, P.E.In 1989 Mr. Santos co-founded Facility Dynamics Engineering and functions as Principal and Senior Controls Engineer. He teaches HVAC controls courses for the University of Wisconsin, North Carolina State, and the Energy Resource Station in Iowa. Jay is a member of the HVAC Engineering Editorial Advisory Board and was the contributing author for the "Control Freaks" column.
David Sellers, P.E.Mr. Sellers has over 30 years experience in the buildings industry. This experience includes over 24 years performing commissioning, design work, project engineering and training, 4 years in mechanical and control system contracting and 2 years as the HVAC and fire protection facilities engineer at a silicon wafer fab. David's recent projects include: retro commissioning work for UC Berkeley and Marriott, engineering studies and analysis for GSA and UC Berkeley, and new construction commissioning for GSA and developing and delivering training and infrastructure support for the commissioning industry via various utility programs.
