Craig Schilling — 2014 Distinguished Service Award Recipient Q: What does being chosen to receive the Distinguished Service Award mean to you? A: It’s the highest compliment I could receive. Ron Everett’s real legacy is that he elevated the status of the profession and Illinois ASBO in Illinois. I was lucky enough to work with Ron most of my career. I think both Ron and I considered service to the profession a “calling.” Q: Why do you think it is important to recognize outstanding school business officials? A: It’s important to provide examples for people entering our profession. Service to the profession is not something everyone thinks about nowadays the way they did twenty or thirty years ago. It is important for young business officials to see how serving Illinois ASBO has helped other individuals. Q: How has your involvement within Illinois ASBO shaped your career? A: I think my true “first love” has always been teaching. Through Illinois ASBO I have been able to teach, mentor and present to others in our profession – this sharing has allowed me to grow as well as them. Q: What advice would you give to those that aspire to follow in your footsteps? A: Always make your first priority the success of those around you. If you do that, you will be not only successful but also content in what you do. Q: Your thoughts on the mission and importance of the Illinois ASBO Foundation? A: After my time on the Board, I established an Annual Conference scholarship. The Foundation is important in providing professional development opportunities for both students and professionals.
