During this workshop, professionals will identify
the stages of gender identity development and expression evident throughout
childhood and adolescence, explore the unique needs and challenges of
transgender youth, gain knowledge about the process of gender transition, learn
about the particular challenges facing families with gender-different and
transgender children, and gain skills for facilitating family acceptance of
children and optimal emotional and social development of these youth.

Elijah C. Nealy, M.Div., LCSW is an out transgender
man with over 25 years experience as a clinician, trainer and consultant around
LGBT concerns in both pastoral and social service settings. He is the former
director of adolescent & adult mental health at the LGBT Community Center
in NYC, and served as the Center’s Deputy Executive Director. He currently
teaches at Columbia University School of Social Work, Union Theological
Seminary, and the Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy. In his private practice, he specializes in
gender identity concerns with youth, adults, and families, as well as seeing
individuals around a range of other life issues.
