Master Series in Clinical Practice

Jointly sponsored by The Continuing Education Program at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, a Major Teaching Hospital of Harvard Medical School; Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute; and William James College.

The Master Series affords the chance to spend a complete day with leaders in our field to consider the unique perspective each speaker brings to the challenging dilemmas in both theory and practice. We hope that you will consider joining us for the entire series at a reduced tuition or choose the programs most relevant to your own practice.


Tim Havens, MD, instructor

This workshop will focus on fundamental organizational principles that are relevant to understanding how organizations function and how to understand leadership effectiveness and the personal psychology of those who lead organizations.  These principles, used in executive leadership seminars, will be presented in a fashion that allows application to for profit corporations, nonprofit institutions, government, partnerships, professional societies, volunteer and civic organizations, entrepreneurial startups, and health care.  Also, the impact of organizational size, complexity, and composition will be explored.

The characteristics of role and function of individuals who are in leadership positions will be examined including the important interface between individual psychology and organizational needs.  Conflict will be examined from the perspective of individual temperament, personal cognitive capacity, role clarity, and changing organizational objectives. The material will be presented in a fashion that will be relevant to those who work in organizations, those who have leadership roles, those who consult to organizations or coach their leaders, and those who do therapy and treat individuals who lead or work in organizations.

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

· Describe how to understand an organization regardless of type or size

· Evaluate individuals working within the organization

· Discuss the unspoken/unconscious factors in the relationship between individual and organization

· Assess critical factors impacting personal and organizational adaptation

Tim Havens, MD, is senior vice president at The Levinson Institute, Director of the program Leadership for Physician Executives at Harvard Medical School. He is a psychoanalyst at the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute. Dr. Havens is a lecturer at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard, as well as other universities in the United States.  He has written about effective organizational leadership and lectures extensively on leadership development, managing organizational change executive coaching, medical leadership, and building effective management teams.
