My Psychoanalytic Journey: A Retrospective

Nov 09, 2015 12:00am -
Nov 22, 2015 12:00pm

Event Description

My Psychoanalytic Journey: A Retrospective

Online: November 9-22, 2015

This one-hour online presentation is taught by Patrick Casement, a faculty member in our Luminary Series, and represents a distillate of his current thinking about the interface between psychoanalytic constructs and the application of those theoretical concepts to the clinical situation.

A highly personal account of my journey as a psychoanalytic therapist and psychoanalyst will be offered.  The interweaving of my personal history along with my career development will depict the various challenges and transformations that made me the clinician and writer I am today.  Case material in anecdotal form and via clinical formulation will be included as pertinent. A trajectory will be traced that follows the ways in which I developed, what I embraced and what I rejected in order to bring to the fore what I believe to be the fundamental principles and values of a psychoanalytic psychotherapist.

Upon completion of the program the student will be able to:

  • Describe the fundamental values of a psychoanalytic psychotherapist.
  • State 3 basic principles of psychoanalytic psychotherapy.
  • Describe the role of humility in the psychotherapeutic process.

Biographical Sketch

Patrick Casement, MA, is an Associate of the International Psychoanalytic Association, a Fellow of the Institute of Psychoanalysis (London), a Training analyst (retired) of the British Psychoanalytic Society.  After reading Anthropology and Theology, he worked as a probation officer and then as a family caseworker (in the East End of London). He subsequently trained as a psychotherapist and later as a psychoanalyst. He wrote four books, the first two of which have recently been selected by Routledge to launch their new series "Classics in Mental Health". The third, "Learning from our Mistakes", received a Gradiva award for it contribution to psychoanalysis. His last book, "Learning from Life" is partly autobiographical. Patrick has recently survived an aggressive cancer and approaches today's event with a renewed passion for life.
