Intimate Partner Violence

Online Course begins October 16, 2017

Weekend-In-Residence: Friday-Saturday, November 17-18, 2017 from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm


This blended learning course will expose participants to emerging research in interpersonal violence and best practices using available guidelines and standards for evaluation of IPV.

The course is a blended learning format and spans 4 weeks of online coursework for 13 hours and 15 hours of on-site instruction over a weekend-in-residence. It provides 28 Continuing Education Credits.

This course in Intimate Partner Violence is designed for professionals engaged in providing services to children, adults and families and the courts who seek to provide or understand best practices of investigation, evaluation, and testimony in matters where domestic violence is alleged. Mental health practitioners, mediators, attorneys and other professionals with graduate degrees and a license or certification will have the opportunity to expand their practice and skills in this emerging area.

Participants in this in this course will:

  • Students will be able to identify definitions of interpersonal   violence

  • Identify the impact of intimate partner violence on children and alleged victim and perpetrator

  • Demonstrate the components of an evaluation of IPV

  • Identify problems and strategies for assessing risk

  • Recognize different outcomes for different types of violence

  • Identify risks for different categories or types of violence.

  • Apply a systematic approach to providing a sound evidence-based report and opinion

  • Identify conflicting priorities for families where IPV is present

  • Examine interventions for families when IPV is present

  • Identify ethical issues inherent in evaluations and testimony

Robin Deutsch, Ph.D., ABPP, is the Director of the Center of Excellence for Children, Families and the Law at William James College. She practices as a therapist, consultant, mediator and parent coordinator. For over 20 years Dr. Deutsch conducted child custody evaluations and was the training director of the Children and the Law program at Massachusetts General Hospital. She is the past president of the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts (AFCC), former Chair of the American Psychological Association (APA) Ethics Committee, and served on the committees that developed the AFCC and APA Guidelines for Parenting Coordination, and AFCC committee developing guidelines for assessing interpersonal violence in child custody evaluations.

Leslie Drozd, Ph.D., is a licensed psychologist and marriage, family, and child therapist, specializing in family violence, trauma, and substance abuse. She is a consulting and testimonial expert, trains judges, attorneys, and mental health professionals, and has a variety of professional publications including books, book chapters, and peer-reviewed journal articles. She is the editor of the peer-reviewed Journal of Child Custody.
