Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology Summer in the City

Sponsored by MSPP’s School Psychology Program

Come to Newton/Boston in July for an engaging learning opportunity at MSPP. Pursue classes in a subject area that will enrich your understanding and strengthen your professional skills. Enjoy all that Boston and environs have to offer. There will be additional expenses for books or packets in some courses as well as food, lodging and entertainment.

Accommodations: Sheraton Needham Hotel. The hotel is convenient to Routes 128/95. The hotel has restaurants and is convenient by car to MSPP.


Bilingual and Culturally Competent Assessment

Monday–Thursday, July 15–18, 22–25, 2013

This course covers research and practice with culturally diverse populations, including bilin­gual language development. Assessment measures of language ability (English and other languages) such as the BVAT, WJ-III oral language scale will also be covered. Nonverbal assessments are also taught including use and misuse of English- and other-language standard­ized psychological tests such as the WISC-IV, WJ-III, and the BATERIA-III Woodcock-Muñoz. The course will cover use of informal and curriculum-based assessments, use of interpreters, and the non-standardized translations of English-normed tests. Factors to con­sider when assessing or determining the eligibility of a culturally diverse student for special education services are also covered, including acculturation level, consistency of educational background, services received before coming to the US, culture-specific factors, teacher report and experience, informal assessments, curriculum based assessments, response to interven­tion, other assessment scores (e.g. achievement, speech and language), laws associated with the assessment of culturally diverse students, and standards for the educational, and psychological testing of bilingual and culturally diverse students.

Clemente Vega, PhD, is a licensed psychologist with specialty training in neuropsychology. He currently has appointments as assistant professor in the Neurology Department at the Children’s Hospital in Boston, and as instructor in the Psychiatry Department at Harvard School of Medicine. He received his Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology from Carlos Albizu University in Miami, Florida, and his clinical training from Miami Children’s Hospital (internship) and Yale University School of Medicine (fellowship).
