Event Description Steven B. Sandler, MD., instructor
Short-Term
Dynamic Psychotherapy is a term that describes a number of approaches to
therapy, but all are derived from basic psychodynamic concepts (defense
mechanisms, transference, resistance, etc.).
These techniques were developed as early as the 1960s, but more recently
researchers have established that STDP is effective for a wide range of common
problems, including depression, anxiety, somatic disorders and some personality
disorders. In this program, we will explore
the basic concepts and demonstrate them with videotapes of patient
encounters. We will also discuss a new
focus on positive attachment memories that has helped some patients achieve a
fuller resolution of symptoms. This approach is described in Dr. Sandler’s
book, Remembering with Emotion in Dynamic
Psychotherapy. Upon completion of the program the student will be able to:
·
Discuss
the relevant research on STDP.
·
Explain
the importance of working with defense mechanisms.
·
Describe
the rationale for working with early attachment memories. Program Code: STDP 3 CE Credits Location: at MSPP, Newton
