Event Description

Public interest career counselors, pro bono program managers, and other public-service career professionals from the law school and employer communities are invited to attend the 2014 NALP/PSJD Public Service Mini-Conference on Thursday, October 23rd at the Washington, DC office of O'Melveny & Myers LLP with additional programming for newcomers and a welcome reception on Wednesday, October 22nd.

SUMMARY

Participate in this ideal opportunity to meet and network with colleagues from across the country, attend substantive and skills-based programs, and interact with NALP staff members! The Mini-Conference’s morning programs will include introductions, PSJD Honor Roll announcements, and a plenary program. Our luncheon will feature an announcement of the PSJD Pro Bono Publico award recipient, which is a student who has performed exemplary public service during her/his law school career, an update on staff-driven initiatives, and the NALP Public Service Section meeting. Our afternoon sessions will include two blocks of programming for a total of five breakout sessions. Our plenary program this year will discuss serving veterans and how law school programs can help.

Afternoon programming will include five exciting breakout sessions:

  • Programming in the Age of Budget Cuts: Doing More With Less
  • Capitol Hill and Non-Honors Program Government Hiring
  • The Art of Writing Successful Applications for Public Interest Fellowships
  • Keeping the Motivational Fires Burning For You and Your Students
  • 101 Part 2 Newcomer’s Hot Topics: New or New-At-Heart Topics of Interest
  •

This year’s Mini-Conference events will once again include the popular Public Interest Advising 101 session for newcomers. Public Interest Advising 101 will be hosted at the Georgetown University Law Center on the day before the Mini-Conference, Wednesday, October 22nd, from 4:00-5:00 pm. This year, we will combine the highly useful introductory programming for newcomers to the field and for more experienced professionals who have recently added public interest advising to their portfolios with an opportunity to chat with colleagues old and new at the Welcome Reception. Come meet members of the Public Service Section and make new friends. It’ll still be early enough to take advantage of the great restaurant options DC has to offer with friends on your own afterward. All Mini-Conference and 101 attendees are invited to attend the Welcome Reception from 5:30 – 7:00 pm.

The Mini-Conference, NALP’s premier public interest event, is a great opportunity to spend time with friends and colleagues during the Equal Justice Works Conference and Career Fair weekend, and offers wonderful programming that will benefit both veteran public interest career professionals and newcomers alike. We look forward to seeing you this fall!

NALP and PSJD thank the Georgetown University Law Center and the law firm of O’Melveny & Myers LLP for their partnership and generosity in hosting our Mini-Conference events.
