Event Description

This PIL program is divided into three section:  Preparation, Recruitment, and Retention.  These three sections comprise the seven on-line hours of pre-recorded PowerPoint presentations and interviews with subject matter experts.  In Section 1, the presentations and recorded interviews will provide the rationale for gender diversity and equity due to its importance to student self-image, student aspirations and academic performance, as well as economic development and financial independence, beyond it just being the right thing to do.  In Section 2, participants will realize the relationship between gender equity, the career education & work standards, and the factors that influence students’ decisions in their course selection and career goals.  Finally, in Section 3, participants will be exposed to the importance that role models make in student self-image and confidence to high-skill, high-wage careers.

Participants will complete three job embedded assignments that comprise 28 hours of the program.  The first job embedded assignment is to conduct a survey of their facility to determine where the facility could be improved to better serve non-traditional students. This assignment also includes a survey of non-traditional students currently enrolled in the career and technical school to identify barriers that these students see and feel are deterrents to enrollment and completion of the career and technical program by non-traditional students.

The second job embedded assignment is to plan and conduct a middle school program based career education and work standards for middle or elementary school students.  This activity will not only increase student achievement of career education and work standards, but it will also have a positive impact upon the school and school district’s Future Ready PA Index.  The third job embedded assignment is to organize and implement a non-traditional careers activity for students currently enrolled in the career and technical school that involves appropriate role models.

In the culminating project, participants will share and discuss what they learned through the PIL with the professionals and paraprofessionals in their institution about the role that overt and unintentional bias plays in the classroom as it relates to student achievement.

*Denote that the PIL is a self-paced, online PIL program.
