Functional Expense: Why it is Important to Get it Right
Monday, September 11 & Monday, September 25 | 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM | Web Meeting

Presented by: Presenter: Cindy Bergvall, CPA, Director, Bee, Bergvall & Company
Facilitated by: Tish Mogan, Standards for Excellence Director, PANO

“100% of your donation goes to programming!”  We sometimes hear this promise as part of an overzealous fundraising campaign. But is that really the best way to encourage donors? We all know that it takes money to make money and that you need a strong management platform to run your organization well. So you need fundraising expenses and administrative expenses. But what is the “right” mix? And how do you calculate what expenses go into what functional expense category?

This online program will focus on:

  • How to allocate your expenses into programming, administrative, and fundraising categories
  • Best practices in allocation methods
  • Practical examples
  • How to educate your board and your donors about why 100% of funds going to programming is not a good message
  • How the upcoming new nonprofit standard will affect your financial statement disclosures on functional expenses
  • What your functional expense results can tell you about managing your organization for greater impact

The program consists of four modules covered in two one hour sessions on line.

Session 1 | Monday, September 11, 2017

Module 1 (functional expense 101)

  • How to allocate your expenses into programming, administrative, and fundraising categories
  • Best practices in allocation methods
  • Practical examples

Module 2 (100% of your donation is not going to programming - and that’s a good thing!: educating donors and your board)

  • How to educate your board and your donors about why 100% of funds going to programming is not a good message

Session 2 | Monday, September 25

Module 3 - The new nonprofit standard and functional expenses

  • How the upcoming new nonprofit standard will affect your financial statement disclosures on functional expenses

Module 4 - What does your functional expense statement tell you about the impact of your organization

  • What your functional expense results can tell you about managing your organization for greater impact
