Join us for a two-part (2 hours on 2 days) virtual course intended for professionals looking to increase their knowledge about ADU development in the city of Seattle. This class is specific to the Seattle market.
Participants will gain critical information to help them to respond to increasing client demand for properties with ADU potential, as well as the opportunity to earn the ‘ADU Specialist’ professional accreditation.
Increasing numbers of prospective home buyers and homeowners are interested in building an ADU on their property. Professionals on the cutting edge of this emerging development trend can better serve their homeowner/developer clients by understanding site eligibility, development process and costs, and the return on investment of ADUs in their local area.
This course is intended to help industry professionals understand the basic planning and building regulations for ADU development in Seattle per land use and energy code updates and to provide insight into ADU regulations in the broader Seattle metro area.
Learning Objectives:
- Understand what makes a property ADU-ready/eligible in Seattle, WA
- Learn what is involved in the process of getting approved to build an ADU
- Analyze taxation, valuation and financing options for ADUs
- Understand the ADU design, permitting, and building process (attached, detached, and garage conversion)
- Gain access to resources to help your clients plan for their ADU (including a budget sample, contract types, development rebate programs, and more)
- Gain insight on ADU regulations in the broader Seattle, WA region
- Get answers to your ADU-specific questions

Attend this training and become eligible to earn the nationally-recognized ‘ADU Specialist’ accreditation in order to display your ADU expertise to the market. Join the network of over 300 accredited professionals across 13 states who have leveraged the designation to add valuable credibility to their business and tapped into this growing market with the backing of an organization that has trained and accredited thousands of professionals across the country on sustainable building practices.
Participants must attend one of our qualified trainings (this ‘All About ADUs’ class is one of them) and pass an accreditation exam. After passing the exam, Earth Advantage provides a registry listing, logo package, and marketing support for ADU Specialists to then promote their newly acquired designation via business cards, email signatures and website in order to differentiate themselves from other professionals.
‘All About ADUs’ participants who would like to pursue the ‘ADU Specialist’ designation will need to register for the exam separately (learn more and register here). Note: ‘ADU Specialist’ is an optional designation and it is not required to attend the ‘All About ADUs’ course.

Instructor Bio: Sheri Newbold: Architect & Owner of live-work-play
Sheri brings over 20 years’ experience into designing homes, ADUs, additions and renovations, and anything between, that her clients dream of. Sheri has been teaching Seattle-ites about creating detached ADUs for many years, is fluent in sustainable and energy-efficient design, and worked among a committed group of volunteers successfully advocating for the passage of the new ADU changes to the land use code in Seattle in 2019.
IMPORTANT! Attendance requirements: Live online course will be presented via ZOOM Meeting. The link to join the meeting will be sent in the confirmation email. Students will need a device with two-way video and audio capabilities and a (free) Zoom account. To verify attendance, students must keep their camera on for the duration of the course and respond to live polls. Clock hour credit will only be given to students with their camera on, who are present and visible on their camera during the course, and who participate in course polls/chat.
