GREEN 200: The Science of Green Building
Working from the outside of the home to the inside, Green 200 helps students comprehend green home design and basic construction principals for new and existing homes. This is the second of three required courses for the NAR's Green Designation.

- Learn Green principles and choices available in home design and construction
- Become familiar with Green innovative materials, systems, and construction methods
- Learn about different energy-efficient systems including onsite power generation
- Leave with the ability to distinguish levels and cost-benefits of retrofitting, remodeling, or renovating existing homes

200.1 Green Home Design
- Describe consideration sin site and design selections
- Follow the sequence of steps in green home design and the selection of materials and systems
- Suggest methods and find sources for managing construction waste
200.2 Green Home Construction - the Building Envelope
- Identify components of the building envelope
- Learn about innovative building technologies and materials
200.3 Green Home Construction - Systems
- Recognize types of green systems for homes
- Communicate the pros and cons and interrelationships of interior systems
- Guide consumers to information about incentives for green homes
200.4 Power Off the Grid
- Communicate the pros and cons of generating your own energy
- Discuss the technologies and methods for on-site power generation including wind and solar power
200.5 Greening Existing Homes
- Explain the benefits of retrofits for existing homes
- Evaluate cost-benefit balance of retrofitting, remodeling, renovating.
Students must complete all designation courses to satisfy the educational requirements for NAR's Green Designation. Subject matter experts in both the real estate and environmental industries established a curriculum filled with the most current issues and innovative research in green real estate to give designees a competitive edge in the market.
To obtain and use NAR’s Green Designation, three (3) requirements must be fulfilled:
1. Complete the following courses and pass each exam with a score of 80 percent or higher;
a. Green 100: Real Estate for a Sustainable Future – Awareness and Comprehension
b. Green 200: The Science of Green Building – Research and Insight
c. Green 300: Greening Your Real Estate Business – Application Skills
2. Submit the member application for NAR’s Green Designation with proof of completion for all course requirements and proof of your REALTOR® membership.
3. Maintain active and good membership status with the Green REsource Council and the National Association of REALTORS®.
Your Green REsource Council membership begins upon completion of any two (2) of the three required courses, providing you with editions of The REsource – our monthly eNewsletter. If you are an active member in NAR or an International member, your first year of membership is free. Your second year (starting one year after your membership starts) will reflect a pro-rated amount. Your third year and thereafter will require an annual renewal of $99 and an active membership with NAR to maintain and use the designation.
NAR's Green Designation counts as credit towards earning the following designations and certifications:
- Accredited Buyer's Representative (ABR®) designation
- Certified Residential Specialist (CRS) designation
- Resort and Second Home Property Specialist (RSPS) certification
