A list of our committees is presented below:

  • American History & Government Affairs
    Outings to local points of interest and historical sites in the Washington, DC area. This committee focuses on events that shaped America and offers special programs pertinent to our community and our times.
  • American Look
  • Architecture, Garden & Home Design
    Schedules visits to private homes, gardens and buildings. Arranges lectures by architects, designers, decorators and horticulturists to broaden our knowledge of architectural styles, gardens, and nature.
  • Art
    Visits private collections, artist’s studios and museums, such as the Munch Collection, Torpedo Factory, and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden.
  • Book Discussion
    This group meets monthly to discuss literature and books by American authors, as well as books by writers from around the world. Volunteers host, lead discussions and plan programs. Last Friday morning of every month.

  • Bylaws
    The Bylaws Committee shall be composed of no fewer than seven active members appointed by the President, plus the chair and the President. The committee shall have an uneven number of members.
  • Calling (DC)
    Establishes contact with a recently arrived diplomat - usually the spouse - in order to arrange for a visit with that person. The aim is to provide useful and practical information about the area.
  • Calling (MD)
    Establishes contact with a recently arrived diplomat - usually the spouse - in order to arrange for a visit with that person. The aim is to provide useful and practical information about the area.
  • Calling (VA)
    Establishes contact with a recently arrived diplomat - usually the spouse - in order to arrange for a visit with that person. The aim is to provide useful and practical information about the area.
  • Cooking
    Demonstrates preparation of American meals and serves them in private homes. Chefs from other countries and from area restaurants offer tips and techniques on preparing their specialty dishes.
  • Development
    Focuses on raising funds to support the numerous activities at THIS. Volunteer activities can include participating in fund raising events, identifying and making contacts to potential donors, researching grants and giving programs, and preparing documentation for potential donors.
  • Embassy Liaison
    Committee members help THIS for Diplomats achieve its mission by providing a personal link between THIS for Diplomats and the embassies. Volunteers are assigned to one or more embassies. They work with an embassy representative to help THIS for Diplomats learn about the arrival/departure of diplomats and to share information about THIS for Diplomats services and programs.
  • Finance Advisory
    The Finance Advisory Committee has the authority and the responsibility to advise, recommend, and oversee the annual budgets of THIS for Diplomats (THIS) including a budget for THIS membership funds and one for Meridian International Center funds. The committee shall also be responsible for the management and investment of THIS funds.
  • Foreign Conversation and Cultural Exchange- French
    Groups meet informally to renew, retain, or polish language skills and to explore culture. Groups are generally conducted in the target language. The level of fluency varies. Volunteers may be asked to host, plan programs, drive, and meet other needs. Current meeting times are: French—2nd and 4th Tuesdays
  • Foreign Conversation and Cultural Exchange- German
    Groups meet informally to renew, retain, or polish language skills and to explore culture. Groups are generally conducted in the target language. The level of fluency varies. Volunteers may be asked to host, plan programs, drive, and meet other needs. Current meeting times are: German—2nd and 4th Friday mornings

Volunteers may be asked to host, plan programs, drive, and meet other needs. Current meeting times are: Spanish—1st and 3rd Monday mornings
  • Foreign Cultural Exchange- Arabic
    Groups meet informally to renew, retain, or polish language skills and to explore culture. The Arabic group emphasizes cultural exchange with some basic language learning; knowledge of the language is not assumed. Volunteers may be asked to host, plan programs, drive, and meet other needs. Current meeting times are: Arabic—4th Monday mornings
  • Foreign Cultural Exchange- Japanese
    Groups meet informally to renew, retain, or polish language skills and to explore culture. The Japanese group emphasizes cultural exchange with some basic language learning; knowledge of the language is not assumed. Volunteers may be asked to host, plan programs, drive, and meet other needs. Current meeting times are: Japanese—2nd Friday morning
  • Fundraising Event
    Suports our aspects of planning and executing our major fundraising event. Events in the past have included the Waltz Ball, Mardi Gras, and Spring Soiree.

  • Government Affairs
    Conducts seminars on elections and other governmental issues and offers tours of government agencies such as the Pentagon, FBI, Supreme Court, State Department, Congress and White House.
