Show Your Work in a Better Light: New Tips & Techniques for Lighting & Daylighting Homes

Presenter: Doug Walter, Architect, owner Doug Walter Architects

The primary source of illumination in any kitchen and bath should be natural daylight. However, the sun doesn't shine all day and night long, so we need to provide ample electric lighting to keep illumination levels high. Most designers have learned lighting on the job with incandescent but LED's are a game changer. Find out about the latest products that will change the way we illuminate homes in the next decade and what is cost-effective right now. Learn how to compare the performance of competing light sources and make sound budget choices. Understand the relationship of free daylight to electric lighting you pay for. Learn from several actual case studies of before and after relamping with real foot candle measurements.

A Complete Residential Project in SketchUp

Presenter: Michael Brightman, author of The SketchUp Workflow for Architecture, owner of Brightman Designs.

SketchUp can be leveraged during every phase of the architectural design process; site analysis, schematic design, design development, and construction documents. In this session, directly from 3D Base Camp 2016, Mike Brightman will walk you through a real renovation project from beginning to end. The process starts with using Geo-location and Match Photo features to expedite the existing conditions model and drawings. Concept iterations are sketched by hand over existing conditions drawings, then modeled and refined in SketchUp. The final SketchUp model adheres to a system of SketchUp standards, making it ideal for both documentation in LayOut and rendering in photo real visualization programs.

60 - Minute Sessions (1.0 Primary CE each):

2D vs. and 3D: How to Stop Being Opposed

Presenter: Benjamin Tabolt, president of CDG Project Studio

Benjamin will eliminate the frightful myths of using BIM in residential design (BIM-R) by showing you how to create complete 2D drawings with the same software used to create the model. Using Revit as a case study, Benjamin will demonstrate the process it and multiple other BIM programs use to develop a concept BIM model, advance it to design development and then transition to the construction documents all within the BIM program. Finally, you'll discuss the options available to help the client visualize the project and understand the design both through the BIM Software as well as third party visualization software.
