Program Description

Join the AAA-CPA and Rebecca Peikes, MST, CPA of RSM US, LLP on July 20th in an informative discussion of Pennsylvania and federal trust taxation.  Rebecca will provide us with an overview of Pennsylvania rules related to grantor trusts (including significant differences as compared to the federal rules), trust residency determinations, resident withholdings and resident credits and the effect of Pennsylvania taxes paid by grantor.  Rebecca will also address the state laws related to capital gains and the federal 65 day election along with the Section 645 election.  Other issues will include fiduciary accounting income, passive versus active requirements and the distinction between principal and interest.  This discussion will enhance the ability of our members to draft accurate trust documents and to properly report trust items on both state and federal returns. 

Learning Objectives

  • Provide an overview of Pennsylvania taxation of trusts, identifying significant differences between federal law and Pennsylvania law related trust taxation
  • Identify common drafting errors by lawyers and return preparation errors by professionals, and to provide strategies to avoid such common errors
  • Understand the tax issues that should be considered when drafting Pennsylvania trust documents
  • Obtain a basic understanding of selected federal issues and elections when drafting trust documents

About the Speaker

Rebecca J. Peikes, a partner in the RSM tax practice, has over 25 years of experience in the areas of tax planning, transactional structuring and compliance. Her focus is compliance and tax planning for income taxes, succession planning and business issues for high net worth individuals and fiduciaries. Rebecca represents clients in front of taxing authorities. Her expertise includes serving high net worth individuals, the real estate and construction industries and service companies. Prior to joining RSM, Rebecca was a principal at a local accounting firm where she advised real estate and high net worth clients regarding tax, financial, strategic and business matters. Rebecca serves on the Board of Directors of Federation Housing where she has served as treasurer.
