AADPRT Update

Art Walaszek, MD, 1/28/2017

All eyes are on San Francisco as we plan for AADPRT’s 2017 Annual Meeting, for which we have selected the theme, “Define "Psychiatrist": Merging Passions, Pressures, and Values.”  Our Program Chair, Adam Brenner, MD, elaborates:

The task of defining “psychiatrist” takes on particular importance as training directors increasingly find themselves in a reactive mode, where their attention is occupied with growing regulatory and reporting requirements. We intend for the AADPRT meeting to be a space for thinking about the values and passions that draw psychiatry educators into this field.  We hope to grapple with the following questions: What is our vision for the kind of doctor we are training our residents to become? What knowledge base, what skills, what character traits should a physician attain to best serve future patients with mental illness? In other words, how do we – as individuals and as a group – define "psychiatrist"?

We are honored to host Elyn Saks, JD, PhD, Orrin B. Evans Professor of Law, Psychology, and Psychiatry and the Behavioral Sciences at the University of Southern California Gould School of Law, MacArthur “Genius Grant” awardee, and author of the acclaimed memoir, The Center Cannot Hold: My Journey Through Madness.  Dr. Saks will give our annual Shein Lecture, which honors the memory of beloved residency educator and 5th AADPRT President, Harvey Shein

Our second plenary event will feature three TED-style talks exploring the theme of “Define Psychiatrist.”  John Burruss, MD, Deborah Cabannis, MD, and Michael Travis, MD, will share their visions of the psychiatrist of the future – from the perspective of health care systems, psychotherapy, and neuroscience.

One of the major foci of our organization this year has been on addressing the issue of resident wellness.  We will hold a Presidential Symposium on the topic, with a view to identifying and sharing best practices in the development of programs to promote resident wellness.

We will of course bring back some of our most popular activities, including the award-winning BRAIN conference, our vaunted workshops, and the extremely practical and useful Skills Fair.

The meeting will take place on March 9-11 at the Hilton San Francisco Union Square, with the BRAIN conference on March 8.  On-line registration closes on February 17.  We invite you to register for our meeting here.
