AAP Bulletin Summer 2016

From The Editor

Marika Wrzosek, MD, 8/23/2016

As the world turned to Brazil to celebrate the XXXI Olympiad, I was awe-struck by the dedication, grace, strength, poise, and courage of the incredible athletes that have toiled for years, often at great sacrifice, to reach the pinnacle of their sport and represent their country.  Whether they take home a medal or not, these Olympians become part of history and leave a legacy of greatness.  These athletes have mastered their sports and truly become experts – and like these athletes, we should strive toward greatness.

Individually, what that success or greatness looks like will vary, but collectively – as academic psychiatrists – I’d argue that the legacy we leave behind as educators is counted not just by individual trainees or mentees launched, but rather the hundreds of patients each one of them will treat.  It’s my honor to introduce the next iteration of the Bulletin, and I encourage you all to celebrate the dedication you see and honor the unsung heroes that enable us to thrive.

Our sister organizations are excited to share some updates.  John Spollen shares ADMSEP’s recent pursuits here, and Art Walaszek offers glimpses of AADPRT’s endeavors here.  Andreea Seritan provides highlights from Academic Psychiatry here.

A wonderful Flight of Ideas piece, by recent grad Wynne Lundblad and child psychiatry fellow Meredith Spada, examines the role of “resident as mentor” here.

Heather Vestal presents a wonderful piece on the email holiday here and reminds us that sustaining our wellness is an active process.

Speaking of legacy – I’ve included a link to the spring 1986 Bulletin (here) to remind us that themes in education repeat… what we now take for granted or assume “has always been there” had, in fact, been novel at one point in time.   (It’s noteworthy that the “technology” segment has been represented at AAP for several decades, and has gradually evolved.)

Our own Exec Board shares highlights here.  I am excited to see many of you at the AAP 2016 Annual Meeting, held Sept 21-24 in San Juan, Puerto Rico!

Pre-registration for the Sept 21-24, 2016 Annual Meeting in San Juan, Puerto Rico will end on September 14th... register TODAY at www.academicpsychiatry.org.
