Annual Meeting Theme: New Releases and Classic Vintages for the Educators' Palate

John Luo, MD, 4/9/2015

This year’s theme was selected to help educators in psychiatry to reflect on past workshops and innovations they have utilized in their academic development while incorporating new ideas and techniques.  An experienced educator always appreciates past methodology while looking forward to new developments, much like wine connoisseurs.

Our keynote speaker will be Barbara Schneidman, MD. She is a clinical professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the University of Washington School of Medicine and was the Vice President of Medical Education at the American Medical Association from 2002-2008.  Her keynote entitled “New Wine in Old Barrels: the Changing Face of Psychiatry” reflects the theme as she addresses how psychiatry and psychiatric education has benefitted from early thought leaders, yet some early tenets should be preserved while new ideas should be entertained.

Our Plenary Session will feature Josepha Cheong, MD, facilitating an interactive presentation based on
innovative and traditional methods of teaching.  Drs. Robert Boland and John Spollen help highlight when and where these different teaching methodologies have the greatest impact.

This year, we received a large number of outstanding abstract submissions and the program planning committee has chosen 49 outstanding workshop topics which will focus on this year’s theme of “New Releases and Classic Vintages for the Educator’s Palate.”  We have created a new session called ‘Educator’s Showcase’ to highlight innovative teaching methodologies.  In addition, we have extended our program into Saturday afternoon to accommodate more workshops as well as two new boot camps:  a ‘Technology Boot Camp’ and a ‘Writer’s Boot Camp.’  Marcy Verduin, MD, the annual meeting program chair and her planning committee have crafted these offerings which will provide attendees with knowledge, skills, and tools to utilize and share with peers and trainees that will advance patient care.

I look forward to seeing you in San Antonio!
