Hear music therapists working in a variety of aging settings share their theoretical frameworks, research, and clinical programs and interventions used with older adult, well older adults, forensics, mental health, Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, Parkinson’s, in-patient medical settings, and caregivers.
Objectives:
Participants will identify and apply theories related to creative aging, wellness, validation, and Dalcroze, to their clinical work. (II. A. 3, 4)
Participants will identify current trends in research related to older adults in forensics settings, mental health settings, in-patient medical settings. (IV A.)
Participants will utilize findings from the research to develop clinical interventions for older adults in the community and facility-based settings. (II. A. 5, I. D. 10, 16)

10:00-10:50 Clinical Practice Model of music therapy for people with AD (theory and research) This presentation will include information pertaining to the development, testing, and use of a Clinical Practice Model of music therapy for persons with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD). This model provides an organizational schema for applying intervention strategies in practice and testing the effectiveness of music therapy interventions with this population in clinical research.

1:05-1:30 The Unknown Patient: Informal Caregivers 101- (theory)
As the baby boomer generation ages, the number of Americans age 65 and older will continue to increase, resulting in more individuals who cannot care for themselves. Thus, the demand for caregivers has grown and the psychosocial needs on this population are astounding.
· Learn and identify who informal caregivers are and what caregiving is like in the United States
· Learn the physiological and psychosocial need areas associated with informal caregivers
· Learn therapeutic interventions present within the literature base for informal caregivers
· Learn about music therapy research investigating informal caregivers and considerations for clinical practice with this population.
1:30-2:40 Title: Singing in Parkinson's Disease, (theory and experiential)
Description: A short review of Parkinson's Disease (PD) will be provided. Research in singing in PD will be reviewed with hands-on examples of the intervention and helpful tips and tricks for working with persons with PD.
2:50-3:50 Considerations for music therapists working with older adults in inpatient medical settings (theory and clinical practice ideas)
Participants will learn about the most common causes of hospitalization for older adults and how music therapists can address psychosocial, cognitive, and physical goals with older adults in inpatient medical settings. The presenter will provide an overview of recent music therapy research with hospitalized older adults and offer recommendations for clinical practice.
4:00-4:55 Title: Aging in Prison (theory)

The presenter will share creative aging and wellness-based music therapy theories used to create an intergenerational iPad band. This presentation will include an experiential and attendees are encouraged to bring their tablet and/or smartphone for use during the presentation. An overview of apps used in the program will be discussed.
