Description
Trauma experiences & histories underlie many mental health disorders. Participate in music experiences presented in an experiential format with intent to demonstrate how they can be used safely in the clinical setting. Learn from experiences, case studies, and biographical information that may be uncovered by the music. Review ways in which principles of trauma informed care can be infused into music therapy clinical practice and discuss contraindications.
Learning Objectives:
- Participants will describe how principles of trauma informed treatment can be incorporated into music therapy sessions (CBMT Domain IIII. A. 1.b; 1.e)
- Participants will identify contraindications for music the use of music experiences (CBMT Domain I. A. 2)
- Participants will create music experiences to address client goals (CBMT Domain III.A. 2)
Schedule: (Assuming the scheduled time is 1:00 pm to 6:00 pm; includes 250 minutes for 5 CMTES/LCAT credits)
- 1:00 pm Opening Music Experience & Reflection
- 1:15 pm Introductions and Overview of Session
- 1:30 pm Overview of Trauma Informed Approach to Music Therapy
- 1:45 pm Music Experience #1; Reflection & Discussion
- 2:15 pm Group Exercise: Create a follow-up music experience using principles of trauma informed care

- 3:30 pm Case Study Presentation, Demonstration & Discussion
