P. Advantages & Applications of a Brain Influence Approach to Music Therapy Practice

Description

Speakers will describe how they apply musical influences on brain functioning in clinical interventions. Examples will show how descriptions of the effects of music on the brain are used in gaining and accepting referrals and preparing treatment plans, progress reports, discharge summaries, in-service presentations, research applications, program descriptions and education.

Objectives:

Participants will demonstrate use of data from music neuroscience to inform their decisions about treatment and to evaluate and report clinical outcomes.  CBMT Domain II.A.3.e

Participants will identify specific areas of the brain needing to be stimulated before determining how to musically relate to the client in ways that will stimulate, alter and improve that area’s functioning.   CBMT Domain I.C.3

Participants will demonstrate the ability to incorporate information about brain activation and neural plasticity into written and oral explanations of their professional effectiveness.   CBMT Domain IV.B.6

Schedule:

  • 10 minutes   -   Course Overview and Procedures
  • 50 minutes   -   Review specific brain influences of music and their clinical applications
  • 10 minutes   -   Break
  • 50 minutes   -   Advantages and examples of including effects of music on the brain in assessment and treatment in a medical complex
  • 50 minutes   -   Applications and advantages of using music-brain data in promotional materials and outcome reporting in private practice
  • 10 minutes   -   Break
  • 50 minutes   -   Incorporating effects of music on the brain into college curricula, research and descriptions of professional practice
  • 60 minutes   -   Rewriting participant documentation to include effects of music on the brain
  • 10 minutes   -   Participants complete course evaluation
