I. How I Built This: Developing Music Therapy Programs in the Schools

Description

Learn about models for success in developing and maintaining music therapy services  in the school setting.  Review a variety of successful programs from across the US, focusing on how each was started, developed, and key challenges and responses that have led to longevity and increased access to services.

Objectives:

  • Participants will be able to describe at least 3 current successful models of MT service delivery in the school setting. (CBMT Domain IV. B. 9) 
  • Participants will explain the need to design music therapy interventions and programs that address student goals and objectives based on research, clinical expertise and the needs of the student within the academic setting. (CBMT Domain I. D. 10)
  • Participants will be able to describe at least two approaches the MT-BC may pursue to effectively evaluate the  role of music therapy within the overall therapeutic program in a school setting. (CBMT Domain I. D. 4)
  • Participants will be able to identify at least two ways MTs serving students in the school setting develop and maintain effective professional relationships with the interdisciplinary team and family members. (CBMT Domain IV. B. 8, Domain 1. D. 3)

  • 9:45-11:15 How to sell a school district on a contract, Developing a district based IEP program
  • 11:15-11:30 Break
  • 11:30-1:00 Developing district programmatic services, music therapy in a Special Education Cooperative
  • 1:00-2:00 Lunch
  • 2:00-3:00 Nuts & Bolts: Contracts, Being part of the IEP Team
  • 3:00-4:10 Consult with the Experts: Bring your questions to problem solve & brain storm; Small group work: Contracts, IEP documentation and teaming, Music interventions to build academic and social skills
  • 4:10-4:30 Break
