Description

Clinicians will gain skills in facilitation techniques for productive verbal dialogue within music therapy groups and assist with the transition between music interventions and verbal processing. This workshop will cover the fundamentals of verbal counseling techniques within a humanistic framework and incorporate skills in cognitive-behavioral and motivational interventions.

Objectives:

Obj #1: To learn and apply basic counseling skills and interventions from evidence based theoretical frameworks. CBMT Domain II.A.1.a, b, c, d, e, f, g, h; CBMT Domain II.A.3.a, b, c, d

Obj #2: Integrate knowledge of and apply skills in verbal counseling techniques to increase skill in transitioning between verbal and creative arts interventions. CBMT Domain II.A.2.a, c, g, h, I, o, t, u, w, x, af, ag, ak, am, an, ao, ap, aq, av, ba, bb, bd

Obj #3. Integrate knowledge and apply skills of verbal counseling for ongoing assessment and treatment in order to meet the client’s therapeutic goals. CBMT Domain II.A.5. g, h, k, n, t, z, ab

Obj #4. Develop increased awareness of the self through reflection and experience as it relates to roles as professional therapists, including ethical considerations and responsibilities. CBMT Domain II.A.1.b, g; CBMT Domain IV.A.3&5, IV.B.4; CBMT Domain II.B.1,2,3

Schedule:

Hour 1: 50 minutes educational time: Verbal Interventions & Counseling Techniques, including interspersed didactic and discussion (about 60% didactic, 40% experiential)
10 minute break

Hour 2: 50 minutes educational time: Group Processing & Application:
Increased use of experiential including live music interventions and discussions (about 40% didactic, 60% experiential)
10 minute break.

Hour 3: 15 minutes Experiential (simulated therapy experience). 30 minutes processing and facilitated discussion of problem solving strategies for group therapy practice. 15 minutes Post-Test
