O. An Internship Curriculum Prototype: Developing Training Modules to Ensure Professional Competency

Description

Ensure quality internship instruction and supervision as you systematically, yet flexibly cover the content of the AMTA Professional Competencies! Explore a prototype music therapy internship curriculum that will cohesively meet the diverse needs of interns. Ten modules and subsequent tutorials including lectures, projects, and experiential exercises will be presented.

Learner Objectives:

1.      Identify the four primary phases that outline an intern’s development and potential ways to include a more systematic, yet flexible training approach to accommodate the acceptance of concurrent interns (Board Certification Domain: IV. B. 11)

2.      Identify and explore the 10 Modules of the Competency-Based Training Plan and how they relate to the Professional Competencies (through active participation and video examples) (Board Certification Domains: I. A., B., C., D.; II. A., B., C.; III. A., B.; IV. A., B.)

3.      Identify three ways to advocate for the value and function of an internship to both perspective interns and administrative staff (particularly in situations without financial compensation provided by the internship site) (Board Certification Domain: IV. B. 8, 9, 11, 20)

Schedule:

  • 10 minutes- introduction of presenters/participants, establishing course goals;
  • 20 minutes- introduction to our internship program, development of philosophy and training;
  • 20 minutes- structural overview of curriculum;
  • 10 minute break
  • 80 minutes- exploring training modules 1-3 from the curriculum: Module 1- Welcome to Internship, Module 2- Therapy Implementation, Module 3- Choosing the Right Repertoire, all include video examples, skill building exercises, and instructional material;
  • 10 minute break;
  • 80 minutes- exploring training modules 4-10 from the curriculum: Module 4- Informal Assessment & Treatment Planning, Module 5- Adapted Music Education, Module 6- Clinical Writing Skills, Module 7- Professionalism and Leadership,
  • 10 minute break;
  • 45 minutes- exploring training modules 8-10 from the curriculum:  Module 8- Clinical Improvisation, Module 9- Formal Assessment & Evaluation, Module 10- Welcome to the Professional World!  *all include skill building exercises and instructional material;
  • 15 minutes- questions, wrap-up, course evaluation
