AA. West African Rhythms: Authentic, Adapted, and Accessible Group Drumming Techniques

Description

Learn how to adapt and simplify authentic West African rhythms for clients through a hands-on leadership experience based on a three-year collaboration between a music therapist and a native Ghanaian drummer.  Watch and perform alongside clients.  You will come away with at least two rhythms (Kpanlongo, Sinte, Baaju or Kpatsa), songs, and dances.

Objectives:

Participants will identify, sing, and play at least two West African rhythms. (II.A.5.i4; II.5.ac; IV.A.6)
Participants will demonstrate dance/movement with at least two West African rhythms. (II.A.5.q)
Participants will practice visual, auditory, and tactile cues related to West African rhythms appropriate for clients with varying communication needs. (II.5.s; II.A.5.l)


Schedule:

  • Introduction to Rhythm #1 (Kpanlongo, Sinte, Baaju, or Kpatsa)
  • Components include identifying, singing, playing, moving, and cuing
  • Introduction to Rhythm #2 (Kpanlongo, Sinte, Baaju, or Kpatsa)
  • Components include identifying, singing, playing, moving, and cuing
  • Break
  • Performance/collaboration with students from the MN State Academy for the Blind
