Drew Leemon
Drew Leemon, is the Risk Management Director for NOLS and oversees field risk management for NOLS’ world-wide operations in 16 U.S. states and 16 countries. Drew also supervises the NOLS Risk Services Department, which provides risk management consulting and custom risk management training to adventure programs. Drew began his career in outdoor education with NOLS in 1978 as an instructor teaching mountaineering, rock climbing, backpacking and backcountry ski courses. After various positions in the NOLS administration, he started his current position in 1996. Drew has been influential in adventure program risk management in numerous ways. He has served on the steering committee for the annual Wilderness Risk Management Conference for 21 years. He served for nine years on the Association for Experiential Education’s Accreditation Council and was co-editor of three editions of the Manual of Accreditation Standards for Adventure Programming. He has co-authored six peer reviewed papers on wilderness injuries and incidents and co-authored the book Risk Management for Outdoor Leaders. Drew was the recipient, in 2013, of the Charles (Reb) Gregg Award for exceptional leadership, service and innovation in wilderness risk management. In his free time, Drew is an avid Nordic skier and mountain biker and regularly hikes in the Wind River Mountains near his home.
