Post Graduate Course:  The GI Tract: Select GI Disease States and Associated Nutritional Challenges (PG1-2020)

DESCRIPTION
Because the GI tract’s main role in the body is to process foodstuffs in an elegant, coordinated fashion, it is no wonder that diseases of the GI tract can lead to nutritional compromise.  The GI Tract preconference course will tackle some of the more challenging diseases that clinicians face, specifically: postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), high output ileostomies, pancreatic insufficiency, bile acid malabsorption, eosinophilic esophagitis, and inflammatory bowel disease.  Each presentation will provide background information on the problem, followed by practical nutrition interventions

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
1. Describe postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) and recognize the nutritional challenges associated with it
2. Provide the evidence that underlies the use of nutritional therapies in patients with inflammatory bowel diseases
3. Optimize response of the pancreatic insufficient patient to pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy (PERT)
4. Outline strategies for optimizing nutrition therapy in Eosinophilic Esophagitis (EOE)
5. Recognize the causes and consequences of bile acid malabsorption
6. Determine when to enlist diet and fluid recommendations for the patient with high ostomy output and strategically select and dose medications to enhance absorption and decrease stool volume
