Program Description
Understanding that documentation in the health record is the basis for publicly reported data and therefore an organization’s reputation, Dr. Spellberg will describe how clinical documentation improvement (CDI) is the “universal translator.” Discover best practices for enhanced collaboration with physicians, nursing and health information management to ensure documentation is accurate and can be translated into trusted health information utilized for reimbursement and publicly reported data.

Join attendees to learn how information can be transformed from the clinician’s point of view to information that can be utilized effectively by HIM Coding professionals. Become familiar with drivers of inaccuarate data capture. Learn core principles connecting clinicians with HIM coding professionals. Hear about how one health system’s case mix index results have been impacted by a CDI program.

Continuing Education
This program has been approved for 1.0 continuing education units (CEUs) for use in fulfilling the continuation education requirements of the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) and Board of Registered Nursing (

Dr. Spellberg is Chief Medical Officer at the Los Angeles County-University of Southern California (LAC+USC) Medical Center. He is also Medical Director of Biosciences for Los Angeles County, and Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs at the Keck School of Medicine at USC​.
