Building Commissioning Technical Workshop
Tuesday and Wednesday, October 23/24
8:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center
1100 Fairview Ave N, Seattle, WA 98109

Workshop Description
This Building Commissioning Technical Workshop  will use the Existing Building Commissioning (EBCx) process as a mechanism to introduce and work with the technical skill set used by commissioning providers in virtually every commissioning process from New Construction Commissioning (NCx) to EBCx to Ongoing Commissioning.

The class will begin with an overview of the EBCx and NCx processes to establish a general level of understanding of the goals of a building commissioning process and thus, the framework for the rest of the class.  It will then provide an overview of the technical skills used by most commissioning providers as they work on facilities.

At that point, the class will move to interactive exercises that will use a combination of three dimensional SketchUp models and field activities to expose the attendees to the application of the commissioning skill set.   After working with a very simple SketchUp model with the instructor to get up to speed on using SketchUp, the instructors will lead attendees, working as teams, through scoping a virtual chilled water plant, and virtual air handling system, and a virtual condenser water system using the SketchUp models.

The model-based exercises will be supplemented with field activities in the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center mechanical spaces to reinforce and practice some of the skills the attendees have been exposed to by working with the models.  Subsequently, the instructors will work interactively with the students using trend data, spreadsheets and other tools to develop selected findings in the models.

The finding development session will explore what needs to be done to investigate, implement, and verify common commissioning findings  While the exercises will be specific to the opportunities observed in the models, the techniques and concepts explored will be broad-based and applicable to virtually any commissioning process.

Instructors David Sellers, Facility Dynamics and Bruce Pitts, Wood Harbinger

As a gifted educator and speaker, David Sellers, PE has secured his niche in the commissioning community as a leader in commissioning and controls design by making the holistic commissioning process an imperative element of a successfully run building. He leads many of our seminars on controls design offering over 40 years of hands-on experience to a growing number of operators who are best trying to understand and operate buildings while meeting the goals of improved comfort, seamless operation, and at times, energy and financial savings. A testament to his commitment to the commissioning community is his multiple sessions at the National Conference on Building Commissioning, the on-site development and training work associated with the Marriott Advanced Engineering Program, and multiple Pacific Energy Center workshops. In 2017, David was the recipient of the Benner Award which recognized outstanding performance in ensuring that commissioning is seen as “business as usual” in the commercial building industry.  Facility Dynamics Engineering specializes in providing optimal building performance to facilities and their control systems through the commissioning process. For nearly 30 years ago, our team has demonstrated that a building can operate the way it was designed to or with certain measures, even better than its intended design. With numerous repeat clients and a portfolio of over 4,000 projects, our team of engineers is comprised of former owners, superintendents, and facility managers allowing our owner-focused approach to successfully lead every project with a unique understanding of all involved stakeholders.
