Virtual Education: LGBTQ Cultural Competency: Understanding Gender Identity & Expression

Michael Riordan, Director of Marketing & Cultural Competency Trainer, Compass Community Center

LGBTQ Cultural competency aims to increase knowledge and skills to improve one’s ability to effectively interact with the LGBTQ+ community. We cover the role of Gender Expression in our lives and the influences it has on us daily. We’ll explore Gender Identity and what this means for individuals and society.

Learning Objectives

  • Learn positive, affirming changes in your knowledge, attitude and behavior toward the LGBTQ community.
  • Learn key concepts and terminology pertaining to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer community.
  • Gain an understanding and awareness of the LGBTQ community and positive communication strategies.

About Michael: Michael Riordan is a transgender woman who leads trainings in LGBTQ+ Cultural Competency for groups to better understand gender expression and identity. As a child, Michael struggled with feelings of gender dysphoria, which was not well received by her family at age 10. With few resources for transgender people; and many people not knowing transgender people existed, she hid her true identify for 27 years. Today, Michael lives openly and proudly and believes transgender people should live the same when healthy and safe to do so. She advocates for equal rights and better mental health services. She has a BS in Communications and MS in Educational Leadership. Prior to her advocacy work, she was a high school teacher and owned a marketing business.
