Supreme Court Update on Police Cases

 

IMLA and The State and Local Legal Center  are offering a FREE*  webinar on this term’s Supreme Court police cases.  The Supreme Court’s police cases docket this term includes a hotel registry ordinance case and a pretrial detainee excessive force case along with a number of Fourth Amendment traffic stop cases and qualified immunity cases. Discuss the implications of these decisions for state and local government and police officers with Melissa Arbus Sherry, Latham & Watkins and David Salmons, Morgan Lewis.

Speaker Bios:

Melissa Arbus Sherry is a partner with Latham & Watkins in the Washington, D.C. office. She is the local Co-chair of the Litigation Department and a member of Latham & Watkins’ Supreme Court and Appellate Practice. Ms. Sherry returned to Latham’s Washington, D.C. office in October 2014 after serving five years as an Assistant to the Solicitor General of the United States. In this role, Ms. Sherry represented the federal government before the Supreme Court and assisted in overseeing the government’s litigation in the federal appellate courts. Ms. Sherry has worked extensively with federal government agencies and various components within the Department of Justice.  Ms. Sherry has argued ten cases before the Supreme Court and drafted more than a hundred briefs before the Court. 

Following her graduation from law school, Ms. Sherry served as a law clerk to Justice John Paul Stevens, and to Judge Diana Gribbon Motz of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.

 

David Salmons is a partner with Morgan LewisHe focuses his practice on complex appellate, constitutional, and regulatory matters across a range of legal subject matters, including intellectual property, antitrust, environmental, and commercial litigation. He is the co-chair of the firm's appellate practice, and has argued 14 cases before the US Supreme Court and numerous other cases before other federal district and appellate courts. His litigated cases involve commercial, administrative, civil rights, and constitutional issues.

 

Recognized by Chambers USA, David previously served six years as an assistant to the Solicitor General of the United States. During this time, he received several awards for his work on important appellate matters, including the Department of Justice’s John Marshall Award for Excellence in Handling Appeals in 2006, the Attorney General’s Award for Excellence in Furthering the Interests of US National Security in 2003, and the Office of the Secretary of Defense Award for Excellence in 2005

Lisa Soronen is the Executive Director of the State and Local Legal Center (SLLC). In this role, Lisa files amicus curiae briefs to the United States Supreme Court on behalf of members of the Big Seven (National Governors Association, National Conference of State Legislatures, Council of State Governments, National League of Cities, United States Conference of Mayors, National Association of Counties, and International City/County Management Association) in cases affecting state and local government. Prior to joining the SLLC, Lisa worked for the National School Boards Association, the Wisconsin Association of School Boards, and clerked for the Wisconsin Court of Appeals. She earned her J.D. at the University of Wisconsin Law School and is a graduate of Central Michigan University.
