Event Description

Welcome to the ISSTD Virtual Book Club Registration page.

Our next Virtual Book Club discussion will be a recently published text that has enriched our phenomenological understanding of dissociation. Paul Frewen and Ruth Lanius have authored a book entitled “Healing the Traumatized Self: Consciousness, Neuroscience, Treatment.” What we will learn from their book and from the authors themselves as they interact with us, is how consciousness is affected by trauma, giving us a clearer view of how dissociative experience, in turn, affects conscious awareness. This is a book steeped not only in research into the effects of trauma on brain function, but what the phenomenological sequelae are in terms of conscious awareness and developing a sense of self.

Their findings suggest a model which gives some definition to their work, and is explicated in this text. They suggest a research/clinical paradigm of “neurophenomenology” to serve as an integrative way to understand consciousness and the development of self that is studied by looking at the effects on consciousness in trauma survivors.

Our reading and discussions promise to be lively and enriching for all of us. Please join us in early September for a two month learning experience!

Continuing Education Credits (up to 8 pending approval) will be available for a nominal cost, but the discussion is of course free to you as a member of ISSTD. Please join us!
