Military Appreciation Month Spotlights

We are rounding out our continued to salute our Veteran Members and thank them for their service.

Ardis Conner, D.O.

Having served in the U.S. Navy from 1952-1956, Dr. Conner faced nothing short of challenges in that time while in service! Below is a brief look into her Naval service that led her to using her G.I. Bill for school and eventually a long and successful career as a Maine D.O.!

Dr. Conner was also a member of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary in Maine for over 10 years! She was a qualified Boat Crew member and I was the liaison to the CG Academy AIM program for high school students seeking leadership experience and interested in attending the Coast Guard Academy.

Naval Service History:
1952 Basic Training aka Boot Camp, Waukegan, IL, followed by service school at Great Lakes, IL1953 PN3 (personnelman third class) Keypunch Operator, Center for Advancement & Rating(during this assignment, qualified solo pilot on piper cub airplane, not on Navy’s time or dime)1955-1956 Washington,DC, Naval Transfers of Duty

During his time in service, Dr. Winn served as an Army Physician in Family Practice to special forces, 82nd airborne, and101st airborne. Dr. Winn also proudly served as a Physician to President HW. Bush, President GeorgeW. Bush, Governor Jeb Bush and Bush Family.
 

Currently, Dr. Winn is a Major in Air Force Aux serving with civil air patrol in Sanford Maine.

As a US Air Force and Air National Guard Veteran, Dr. Hardy reached the rank of Colonel during her successful military career.

She is a recipient of the Legion of Merit Award and has quite an esteemed military background. Certified by the Federal Aviation Administration as an Aviator Medical Examiner, she participated in multiple military operations and was recognized for her achievements in developing procedures to ensure critical medical vaccines were filled and administered during an exercise involving more than 600 Air and Army Guardsmen.

She also helped to elevate the medical community involvement in a joint Reserve operational exercise across New England.

Thank you Dr. Hardy for your determination and commitment to excellence!

On May 16th during the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine's Virtual Commencement ceremony, Dr. Charles Radis, a life-long MOA member, and esteemed DO, was awarded the UNE COM Medal of Honor!

UNE COM Medal of Honor, is an award that
"honors those special individuals who exemplify the tireless dedication and bold pioneering spirit of the profession's founder, Andrew Taylor Still. Specifically, the award recognizes extraordinary service to the UNE College of Osteopathic Medicine and our profession. The medal is the highest honor given by the college."

Congratulations Dr. Radis, we agree that you are so deserving of this recognition!

Below is the breakdown of our different awards, you can use our online Nomination Form to nominate a colleague.  We hope you will be attendance as we honor our peers for their dedication and achievements!
 
  • MOA Distinguished Service Award This is the highest honor that the MOA can bestow upon an individual.  This award is presented to a D.O. who has made an immediate significant contribution to the osteopathic profession through a major endeavor for the good of the profession and society and has made a major impact on the osteopathic profession and society over the course of his/her career.1)
  •  Louis Hanson, D.O. Physician of the Year - This award is given to a D.O. who has demonstrated a high quality of practice, a compassionate interest in patients and a commitment to his or her community.  Community is defined broadly to include activities at the local, state or national level and involvement in osteopathic institutions (i.e.: college, hospital, MOA, etc.)
  • MOA Young Physician of the Year - This award is given to a D.O. who has been in practice for at least one full year and not more than five years.  The award is given to a physician who has already demonstrated involvement as a practitioner and member of his or her community and who also demonstrated the potential to become a major force in osteopathic medicine in the future. 
  • Roswell P. Bates, D.O., Public Service Award - This award is given for outstanding achievement in public health, political or community service that enhances and demonstrates the Osteopathic Profession’s commitment to service above and beyond that of direct patient care.
  •  The Sandra Featherman, PhD, Osteopathic Champion Award – (Previously the MOA Board Award)- This award is one that honors an osteopathic physician and/or friend of the osteopathic profession who has made a recent outstanding and significant contribution to the osteopathic profession in Maine
