An Overview of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy

Jun 06, 2014 09:00am -
Jun 06, 2014 4:30 pm

Event Description

Master Series in Clinical Practice

Jointly sponsored by The Continuing Education Program at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, a Major Teaching Hospital of Harvard Medical School; Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute; and the Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology.

The Master Series affords the chance to spend a complete day with leaders in our field to consider the unique perspective each speaker brings to the challenging dilemmas in both theory and practice. We hope that you will consider joining us for the entire series at a reduced tuition or choose the programs most relevant to your own practice.

Robert Goisman, M.D., instructor

This program will serve as an introduction to the expanding field of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT).  Designed particularly for the clinician without a significant background in this form of psychotherapy, this course will provide a review of the development of CBT and an overview of its use in the treatment of anxiety disorders, mood disorders, borderline personality disorder, and psychotic disorders.  Basic methods common to all cognitive-behavioral therapies such as exposure, skill deficit remediation, cognitive restructuring, contingency management, and stimulus control will be discussed in detail.  The relationship of CBT to psychodynamic psychotherapy will also be considered.  The course is most likely to be useful to clinicians working in outpatient or partial hospital settings, but it will be applicable to inpatient work as well.  Other than perhaps regarding some mild anxiety during role-playing, this course is unlikely to be experienced as stressful by attendees.

Upon completion of the program, the student will be able to:

·  Discuss the history and development of CBT

·  Describe CBT approaches to anxiety disorders, mood disorders, borderline personality disorder, and psychotic disorders

·  Define exposure, cognitive restructuring, skill deficit remediation, contingency management, and stimulus control as they apply to the practice of cognitive-behavioral therapy

·  Discuss issues in the relationship between CBT and psychodynamic psychotherapy.
