Event Description Steven Krugman, PhD and Nancy Lundy, EdD, instructors
Mentalization theory, developed by Peter Fonagy, and others, describes how the mind makes sense of interpersonal encounters via the implicit understanding of other people’s intentions. The mentalization process also integrates our own primary experience and associative memories to shape and guide our own intentions toward others. The mentalization model is part of attachment theory and the strength of mentalization is influenced by the nature of the child’s attachment to his or her parents. Fonagy’s research has demonstrated that many forms of self pathology share deficits in the capacity for mentalization. Therapeutic approaches that strengthen mentalization have been integrated into programs for borderline personality disorders, eating disorders, depression and trauma. Techniques that highlight mentalization are also quite compatible with most other forms of psychotherapy. The program explores the theory and is applications in therapy. A combination of lecture, slides, role plays and demonstrations make up the program.
Upon completion of the program the student will be able to:
- Describe how mentalization supports social and emotional intelligence.
- Recognize “good” and “bad” mentalization and understand the condition that leads to its breakdown.
- Explain the importance of affect regulation in maintaining good mentalizing.
